Rubbit: the European rubber asphalt…is Italian.
Incredible sound-absorbing results in the spotlight at Viatec

Bitem offers roads of sustainable development, those that, to customers and builders caught between decreasing resources for administrations and the growing costs of raw materials, provide useful and practical solutions that are competitive and sustainable for both the environment and the economy. One example is modified bitumen technology with crumb rubber, Asphalt Rubber (a web method already used by countries with a strong or rapidly developing economy), that recycles tyres to create a binder for high-performance mixes. With thickness reduced by more than 40% and similar decreases in the consumption of aggregates, transportation and energy, the Asphalt Rubber mix offers high modulus equivalent load-carrying capacity and a much longer service life, thereby increasing grip and reducing splash and spray as well as aquaplaning. Research and tests are being carried out on Rubbit’s sound-absorbing capacities within the context of the “Acoustic Improvement Plans” promoted by the provinces of Florence and Pistoia, and the “Leopoldo” University Project, for the study and optimisation of safety and environmental compatibility characteristics of ordinary traffic pavements. At VIATEC Bitem and Asphalt Rubber Italia will present the initial results of this research which indicates that Rubbit decreases noise by 6 dB(A) in open graded mixes, but already by 5 dB(A) in GAP-graded mixes and with a speed of just 50 Km/h.

Cold recycling with emulsions or foamed bitumen.
Less problems, emissions and truck transport, more environmental and economic sustainability.

The needs for environmental sustainability and real economic efficiency make end-of-service-life recycling an increasingly important characteristic for any kind of product. To help roads adapt to the constant increase in vehicles and loads, Bitem proposes even more sustainable solutions that can be used to cold treat Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement, even directly at the construction site, with new formulations of bituminous emulsions or foamed bitumen. Products and techniques that in addition to recycling used aggregates without additional reclaiming from the environment also offer good load-carrying capacity and decreased energy consumption for machining and transportation, with similar reductions in emissions and costs. Other important but often disregarded aspects of these techniques include: reduction of construction site times and inconveniences for residents and, when these mixes are made on site, a large reduction in the number of trucks transiting to and from the site, and less damage to the surrounding network. The obstacles created by a construction site on a heavily travelled road are a cost for administration and residents, and the wear and tear on the road structure caused by just one 40-ton vehicle travelling back and forth is equivalent to 349,000 transits by cars.
Transparent and bituminous emulsions to improve road integration.
The solution to improve an area’s environment and economy.

In Italy, the main resource is the environment and its extensive historical-cultural heritage.
The value of this resource is enhanced by roads that respect it, making it easier for both locals and tourists to use them, thereby helping tourist and recreational sector companies develop, which strengthens an area’s economy.
Thanks to Bitem’s new formulations of bituminous emulsions and the combo spreader, designed and built by Bitem for road builders, surface treatments can be carried out efficiently and rapidly using eco-friendly aggregates, also in sight on the road surface, to improve a road’s appearance and its integration with the surrounding environment. Such a maintenance system also helps the road surface reacquire exceptional grip and water sealing properties while significantly lengthening its service life, at much lower costs compared to the most commonly used solutions.
The use of the transparent emulsion Emulcolorbit® - obtained from the transparent binder Colorbit® - produces outstanding results in terms of appearance and environmental integration, while also improving the temperature and night-time visibility of the road surface. Emulcolorbit®, for example, was chosen by the forest rangers in the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi to build a connecting road between two areas inside the park. It was also used in the Renaissance gardens of Boboli, within the complex of Palazzo Pitti. These same products and technologies can also be used for dirt road impregnation treatments to increase their performance to meet modern-day requirements, reducing dust levels while eliminating the need for continuous aggregate fill-ins.

 un impianto per la produzione di conglomerato bituminoso totalmente automatizzato (280 tonnellate/ora), dove l’alimentazione a gas, i sistemi di controllo, le dune acustiche e visive, il trattamento del suolo e le reti di raccolta delle acque concorrono a una significativa riduzione dei consumi energetici, delle emissioni e dei rumori;
 un impianto per la produzione di misto cementato (200 mc/ora) con controllo automatico che garantisce qualità elevata e costante in tutte le fasi del processo;

Tracking the Haul of Construction Material with RFID Technology.

The PaveTag RFID application tracks trucks from hot mix plants to pavers using inexpensive RFID tags. The system automatically collects ticket data, computes transportation and waiting times and ensures total traceability on loads delivered to the job.
Trucks are detected at every stage of the transport process. At the plant yard entrance the RFID reader detects the truck entering and exiting the plant. At the scale, our PrintUp™ ticket data capture device reads the truck load tickets when they are printed and transmits that data to eRoutes™. When the truck leaves the plant we detect it using the RFID reader.Pavers are equipped with onboard electronics including an RFID reader which detects when a truck arrives and is also capable of detecting which one is dumping. The truck arrival time and location are sent through cellular networks to eRoutes™ servers.
With the number of screens ranging from one to four and a 'zero console' option, the DrumTronic fits all types of asphalt plants and budgets. The system has the capacity to control all plant operations (including site lighting), or only liquid asphalt and feeders. An industrial grade computer with security and redundancy features ensures reliable operations in all situations. DrumTronic runs on Microsoft Windows® via a communication driver, RTX from IntervalZero, and uses one or more unique I/O boards, depending on the plant complexity, over a real-time TCP/IP protocol.
The human interface has been thoroughly designed in collaboration with actual operators. The layout of information allows for a quick understanding of the overall workings. Delays and timing, for example, are displayed over a graphic representation of material flow and plant layout. These types of details help to prevent errors and misinterpretation. Large arrays of numbers are avoided, in favor of clear symbolic information.
The operator remains in control and the process can be stopped and resumed anytime while direct control of motors is always possible. The software can control silo storage, including complex conveying layouts, ensuring a clean and precise change of silo following a mix change. The software can be linked to additional users through the eRoutes™ platform, providing totals, consumption and inventory usage.

VIATEC 2011
Satisfactory conclusion for “Baumec/Viatec 2011”

Bolzano Fairs and most of the exhibitors look back happily to the last week-end, that offered to the construction industry and the 183 exhibitors a display where 9200 visitors could gather information on work security in constructions, construction machines, all purpose transporters, road constructions, traffic engineering and much more.

“It results from the surveys that Viatec lost visitors, as apprehended, based on the former bank holiday on Thursday march 16th, where as Baumec registered the same visitors traffic count as two years ago”, according to the fair manager Reinhold Marsoner, whom is still satisfied with the outcome, given the effect of the crisis on the construction industry. As by a random survey on 567 visitors, 27.9 % rate the economy of the sector as “declining”, just about half of the respondents (49.6 %) rate it as “stable” and 17.3 % as “growing”; 5.2 % did not answer this question.

Roughly 30% of the visitors came from other regions: the constructions fair combo attracted visitors from all over Italy and abroad and cut them off discreetly; the offer of both fairs was appraised as follows: for 54, 1 % the general impression was “good”, for 11.6 % “very good”, for 27, 3 % “satisfactorily” and for 5.8 % “unsatisfactorily”; 10, 8% of the visitors declared to have placed orders (transacted) during the fair.

There were 183 local and foreign exhibitors that found during the four days at the Bolzano fair a display of the construction industry and who took contact with the sector.

“We exhibit at Baumec/Viatec since we believe in the fair as a marketing instrument and we use this platform to introduce our product to the South Tyrolean market, where we would like to reach a higher degree of brand awareness. The number of the established contacts was the same as two years ago and I believe this will lead to developing good business relationships”, as by Marco Fais, sales manager of Faresin Buliding Division AG

The owner of company Kommland was also very satisfied with the course of the fair: “We meet new customers on the fair and can show our complete product range. We expect a good post fair business development from the contacts we have established”, emphasized Josef Reiterer.

The South – Tyrolean business woman Maria Niederstätter thinks positively, in spite of the ever so often quoted crisis in the construction industry: “We exhibit at the trade fairs in Bolzano since 1975 in order to constantly extend the network of our business contacts and to show our novelties. Trade fairs are an ideal platform, in order to take contact with 2000 representatives of the sector in four days. The construction industry is in crisis but we work hard on overcoming it by insisting on direct contact with the customers, on development and mostly on quality, and the customers are happy.”

The double fair was accompanied during the first two days by the international symposium “ BrennerCongress 2011”, with top class speakers such as Pat Cox – EU appointee for the Brenner Basistunnel; Ing. Konrad Bergmeister – from the BBT Company; Dr. Paolo Montagner – manager of the Road Patrol Department of the Autonomous Bolzano Province, and Ing. Carlo Costa – Technical manager of the Brenner Highways A22.

Saturday stood under the sign of work security: a congress organized with industry partners approached organizational and management models for work protection with the constructions field and implementation of the work protection models in companies. On the other hand, on Friday, within the frame of the double trade fair, the yearly assembly of the Council of the Construction Entrepreneurs in the region of Bolzano took place, where the chances and possibilities of reaching profit while the crisis in the field of constructions was discussed.

More detailed information on the two fairs at www.viatec.it and www.baumec.it.

VIATEC 2011
Program of BrennerCongress 2011 at Bolzano

Railway infrastructures in Europe, recycling in road construction, and the top quality construction of highways and roads for greater quality of life are just a few of the topics at the international specialized conference within the framework of “Viatec”, which will be held in Bolzano at the same time as “Baumec”, the tradeshow for construction machinery and equipment.

In parallel with the “Viatec” tradeshow, the fourth “BrennerCongress” will take place this year on March 17 and 18, 2011 in Bolzano.  The international symposium will provide information about the state of progress with the Brenner Base Tunnel and will deal with topics from research and practice regarding traffic infrastructure in the Alps.  The 2011 version will be the first time that the conference is being held in the capital of South Tyrol.

VIATEC 2011
Baumec/Viatec 2011 at Bolzano/ South Tyrol

“Viatec” will once again take place in Bolzano, Italy this year, offering a valuable platform for those in the road construction and infrastructural rationing fields in the alpine regions to show their services to visitors in the industry.

The trade fair, which is now in its 7th year, to date remains the only trade show to cater for this particular group. Consequently, “Viatec” holds an air of exclusivity which is widely recognised and taken advantage of by companies and individuals, many of whom come to the show as vendors each year, exhibiting to thousands of visitors across three days.

As indeed, in 2009 “Viatec” will be again, combined with the “Baumec” trade show and figures from that year showed that 11,200 individuals came to the exhibition as visitors, with a figure of 4,100 attendees visiting to experience the “Viatec” show alone.

This year’s show is due to take place between the 17th and 20th March 2011, with a focus in particular upon the topics of construction and road reconditioning and maintenance at high altitude or in other areas presenting geographic difficulties.

During these few days, Bolzano will also host the 4th edition of the Brenner Congress, a two-day event held 17-18th March which will feature a range of experts from organisations from around the globe. The congress will provide the opportunity for visitors to experience reports on a variety of current topics important to the industry, as well as have the chance to undergo guided tours of A22 tollway and Brenner Base Tunnel worksites.

More information on the full Brenner Congress programme and pricing can be found on the website, www.brennercongress.com.

VIATEC 2011
“BrennerCongress” for the First Time in Bolzano

During the course of two conference days, international experts will report on the construction, operation, and maintenance of rails and roads.  The subject starting things off will be the Brenner Base Tunnel, followed by other base tunnel projects in the Alps.  These will include the new Turin-Lyons route, the progress with the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the railway extension of the new Lower Inn Valley route, and experiences with the operation of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel.  Another thematic topic will be road tunnels, dealing with an improvement in quality of life by means of qualitative road construction.
The second day of the conference will be dedicated to the maintenance of roads and highways, with presentations on road bridges, roadway coverings in tunnel construction, and safety in the tunnel.  The topic of infrastructure design will also be presented from the point of view of traffic psychologists.  To conclude, the focus will be on product recycling for the construction of infrastructures and the durability of the bitumen.
In addition to the lectures, two workshops will be held: one will compare the NATM, ADECO, and TBM tunneling methods, while the second will concentrate on the subject of natural stone.  The “BrennerCongress” will be rounded out by excursions to the Brenner Base Tunnel and to the A22 Autostrada del Brennero highway.
The conference will be under the scholarly direction of Univ.-Prof. Konrad Bergmeister, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, und Univ.-Prof. Walter Purrer, Department of Civil Engineering Sciences at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck.
