Elena Vincenzi y Alice Camellini
Gabinete de prensa internacional de Interpoma c/o Fruitecom
+39-059-7863894

Cristina Pucher
Gabinete de prensa Feria Bolzano Spa
+39-0471-516012

www.interpoma.it

At Interpoma the state of the art of apple growing

From 15 to 17 November 2012 the benchmark event for the apple sector returns to Fiera Bolzano, aiming to top the previous edition’s figures of 354 exhibitors and 14,200 visitors

Apple growing statistics are back on the rise, following last season’s drop: forecasts presented by Prognosfruit – the annual congress focused on trends in apple and pear production – point to a total volume of roughly 10.2 million tons of apples for the 2011-2012 season in Europe, as well as improvements in quality. An encouraging prospect, in other words, especially considering that consumption trends are being favoured by current price stability. One of the main apple growing areas to feature in this scenario will undoubtedly be South Tyrol, where an apple harvest of over 1.1 million tons is forecast (source: Assomela/CSO).
From 15 to 17 November, the South Tyrol area, whose 18,000 hectares of apple trees constitute the cradle of European apple growing, will be playing host to the eighth edition of Interpoma, the biennial international trade fair dedicated to apple growing, storage and marketing.
For three days the pavilions of Fiera Bolzano will stage what remains a uniquely specialised event devoted exclusively to the apple sector, and which offers professional sector operators an unrivalled opportunity to monitor production and market trends and to update themselves on the latest novelties connected with this star player of the fresh produce market.
The presence of hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors will also offer plenty of business opportunities. Suffice it to say that in the last edition, in 2010, 354 companies from 18 different nations were present along with over 14,200 visitors from 58 different countries, an increase of 22% compared to 2008.
This year’s edition will again include the International apple congress, organised by the internationally renowned expert Kurt Werth in collaboration with the various South Tyrolean apple growing organisations: a three day forum on the most pressing current subjects concerning the sector, which in 2010 featured a series of top flight speakers and a public of almost 900 people. At this moment a whole range of meetings, round table discussions and scientific and technical forums are being organised: the kind of high profile events that for more than 15 years have made Interpoma a benchmark event in the international apple sector.
An unmissable opportunity: Interpoma, the international trade fair dedicated to apple growing, storage and marketing, Fiera Bolzano, 15 - 17 November 2012.

For further information:
Elena Vincenzi and Alice Camellini
Interpoma International Press Office c/o Fruitecom
+39-059-7863894

Cristina Pucher
Fiera Bolzano Spa Press Office
+39-0471-516012

www.interpoma.it

WHOLESOME AND RESISTANT. PLEASANT TASTING
AND HELPFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT. INTERPOMA SHOWCASES
THE NEW VARIETIES OF APPLES FROM CIV
CONSORZIO ITALIANO VIVAISTI

(Ferrara, 26 October 2010) At Interpoma, the international trade show for the cultivation, storage and marketing of apples which will be held in Bolzano from 4 to 6 November, Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti - CIV will present a new series of apple varieties that combine outstanding sensory qualities with excellent natural resistance. The range is able to satisfy diverse needs in terms of characteristics and ripening periods, adapts to different cultivation environments and can be grown alongside traditional varieties.
The five new varieties have passed the trial phase, during which end consumers were involved in numerous panel tests, and are ready for distribution. Developing varieties with a pleasant and appealing flavour, in line with the modern and exacting requirements of the market, has been the primary objective of the research programme conducted by CIV. Resistance to apple scab, the most common fungal disease affecting orchards in Italy and worldwide, also allows for more sustainable cultivation, facilitating the work of producers and safeguarding the environment.
At the next edition of Interpoma (Bolzano, 4-6 November) visitors to the CIV stand (D25/16) will be able to view and taste the new series of apples for themselves, as well as obtaining all the relevant technical and commercial information.

For further information:

Barbara Bonazza CIV Tel. +39 0533-399431
Eugenio Felice CIV Press Office c/o Elnath Comunicazione Tel. +39 045-8352317
Silvia Arcangeli CIV Press Office c/o Fruitecom Tel. +39 059-7863894

Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti - CIV is the Italian leader in varietal innovation and the production of certified propagation materials. Formed in 1983, CIV is located in San Giuseppe di Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara, and is composed of three leading Italian nurseries: Vivai Mazzoni, Salvi Vivai and Tagliani Vivai. A combination of synergy, experience and significant investments in research enables CIV to offer state-of-the-art produce that better meets market needs. Each year the three nurseries produce a combined total of around 5 million rootstocks, 3.5 million trees of apple, pear and stone fruits, 150 million strawberry plants and 2 million asparagus crowns. They also produce other minor fruit species on demand for specific customers. For many years CIV has, with great foresight, been committed to selecting varieties that are capable of providing high quality produce with reduced energy requirement and low environmental impact. CIV is a founder member of the International New Varieties Network (INN), a global association of nurseries that promotes the exchange, evaluation and marketing of new varieties in the main worldwide fruit producing areas. Rubens® and Modì® are two of the most successful products developed to date by the CIV research centre.

The Bolzano exhibition centre will soon be filled with interesting new solutions targeted at operators in the apple cultivation, storage and marketing sectors. From 4 to 6 November 2010, trade professionals will come together at “Interpoma”, the biennial international trade fair and a benchmark of excellence for the economic sector that revolves around the apple industry. Bolzano is expecting operators from all over the world to attend the event, which is being organised with the support of WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association), AREFLH (Assembly of European Fruit and Vegetable Growing and Horticultural Regions), IFTA (International Fruit Tree Association), Assomela and ICE (Italian National Institute for Foreign Trade).

“Interpoma” 2010 will welcome 354 exhibitors from 18 countries including, for the first time, Japan and Israel. In order to satisfy the large number of participation requests, this year “Interpoma” will expand its exhibition area from 15,000 to around 18,000 square metres to include sector A of the convention centre. On show will be products and services for the apple growing, storage and marketing sectors.
Reinhold Marsoner, Managing Director of Fiera Bolzano SpA, confirmed that a number of new releases will be on view, particularly in the logistics, storage and packaging sectors: from a portable non-destructive testing instrument that measures the amount of chlorophyll in the flesh of a fruit, thereby indicating its maturity level, to innovative transport solutions and labelling systems that ensure perfect traceability and therefore guarantee product safety.
The list of participants includes all the big names in the storage and packing sectors, who will showcase labelling machines, automatic pack and material filling systems, sorting machines, water filtration units, crate emptying and refilling systems, weights, electronic programs, measuring systems, refrigeration units, cleaning and sweeping machines, drying units and much more besides.
Among the exhibitors of note at Interpoma 2010 will be a number of nursery companies that are set to unveil new varieties and clones. Two presentations have already been announced: the Golden Parsi(S) da rosa®, a mutation of Golden-Delicious Clone B that is resistant to russeting but which maintains the typical taste, lenticel and overcolour characteristics of Clone B, and the red cap®, a spur clone of Red Delicious developed in the United States which has a pale red colour.
“Interpoma” will be attended by the leading pesticide and fertiliser manufacturers, a number of firms specialising in the production of anti-hail nets and manufacturers of machinery and equipment for plant protection, fertilisation, soil care, harvesting and transport.
Representatives of important trade organisations and institutions in the apple growing sector will also converge on Bolzano for the specialist international trade fair.
As in previous years, the international conference “The Apple in the World” will form the backdrop to the 2010 edition of “Interpoma”.

“Interpoma” will run from 4 to 6 November from 09:00 to 17:00. Day tickets cost 14 euros, or 8 euros if pre-booked online. A 3-day subscription costs 20 euros.

For further information:
Elena Vincenzi
Interpoma International Press Office c/o Fruitecom
+39-059-7863894

Business is booming at the only international trade fair dedicated to the apple

The myth of the apple, new markets, production geography, carbon footprints, pesticide residue and eco-sustainability are on the agenda at the conference “The Apple in the World”, hosted by Interpoma which will take place at the Fair Bolzano convention centre from 4 to 6 November 2010

(Bolzano, 17August 2010) The apple is one of the most popular fruits in the world. In Europe alone, 11 million tonnes of apples were harvested in 2009 and the 2010 production forecast is 9.796 million tonnes, with growers anticipating a reduction in volumes compared to the previous year. In fact the 2010 crop is expected to be 11% down on 2009 and 7% below the average of the last three years (Prognosfruit 2010 data). Italian production is set to account for the lion’s share of this total, despite falling by 3% to 2.165 million tonnes, followed by Poland with 1.980 tonnes (-24%) and France with 1.580 tonnes (-4%).
As regards varieties, Golden Delicious remains the largest variety across the EU-27 with a predicted crop of 2.427 million tonnes, followed by Gala with 1 million tonnes and Red Delicious with 663,000 tonnes.

Apples will be the sole focus of Interpoma, the sector’s only international trade fair, which will be held in Bolzano (South Tyrol/Italy) from 4 to 6 November. This year the three-day event will once again host the conference “The Apple in the World” coordinated by Kurt Werth, Director of the South Tyrol Association for Variety Renewal. The sessions will be attended by international experts and speakers who will discuss new scenarios in the areas of marketing, production, food safety and eco-sustainability. “With wide–ranging topics and high-profile speakers, the international conference on the apple is one of the highlights of Interpoma,” commented Reinhold Marsoner, Managing Director of Fair Bolzano. “Interpoma has always been an exhibition with a strong international focus and has continued to expand its global reach over the years.”

Now in its seventh edition, Interpoma has become an essential event in the apple sector, as demonstrated by the growing number of exhibitors and visitors. The figures for the last edition, which took place in 2008, speak for themselves: 17,000 square metres of exhibition space were visited by 11,653 guests from 57 countries. This represents a substantial increase on 2006, when the event drew 9,646 visitors. The number of exhibitors totalled 280, of whom 205 were Italian and 75 were from 15 overseas countries.

This success is destined to continue and “is attributable to the specialist nature of the event,” explains Kurt Werth. “Interpoma has become an unmissable event for international experts in the sector, thanks in part to the merging of the trade fair and the conference.”
The 2010 edition of the conference will open with an introductory speech on the myth of the apple. “We felt the need to give the apple the same cultural and philosophical dignity as has been given to wine and viticulture,” confirmed Werth. We want to promote a culture of the apple, so that this fruit is no longer perceived solely as a food and a product but also as the symbol of an ancient tradition and history.” The three-day conference will also provide a forum for discussing production and marketing issues ranging from the new production geography, dominated by certain regions of Russia, Moldova and Ukraine, to new market frontiers, such as countries in North Africa and the Middle East. Other hot topics include pesticide residue, carbon footprints and energy balance. “These have become burning issues,” added Werth, “as different countries start to impose carbon labelling on products, to certify the quantity of CO2 emitted during production and marketing processes. The conference will wrap up with analyses by Isafruit and Interpoma. Seven reports will provide an exhaustive overview of the European apple industry.”

For further information:
Elena Vincenzi
Interpoma International Press Office c/o Fruitecom
+39-059-7863894

The Myth of the Apple at Interpoma 2010

Genuine, simple and reassuring. But also tasty, hedonistic and multisensual. And practical, pocket-sized and versatile too. These are some of the reasons why the apple became a myth, as will be clear at Interpoma, the only international trade exhibition dedicated solely to apples, in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy, from 4 to 6 November 2010.

(Bolzano, 17 June 2010) The apple is a “warm” product, that appeals to consumers’ heads, stomachs and hearts. Apples taste of nature and have an archetypal shape: they symbolise authenticity and fruitfulness. And they also embody a series of universally positive values such as genuineness, lightness and simplicity. This is why, according to sociologists, the apple is the fruit which best represents the social and cultural trends of this new millennium, described in Italy (where “mele” is the word for “apples”) as the Melennium.
The apple’s status as a myth will be the main theme of the congress that opens the 2010 edition of Interpoma, the International Trade Show on the cultivation, storage and marketing of apples which will take place in Bolzano Fair from 4 to 6 November.

Apples are in tune with all the macro-trends of the current age: they’re democratic, because they suit all ages and all incomes. They’re delicious and multisensual, thus appealing to consumers’ hedonistic side. But they’re also extremely practical, versatile and flexible, adapting perfecty to the needs of consumers in perpetual motion. Then again, they’re so easy to eat and digest. And above all they satisfy the need for tranquility, security, healthiness and naturalness.
In other words, the apple succeeds in harmonising opposites: a fruit that manages to simultaneously evoke the ancient and the modern, that appeals to everyone – men and women, adults and children – and transcends all barriers of race, creed and nationality.

After all, ever since the time of Adam and Eve the apple has played a key role in human affairs. And throughout history it has appeared in countless tales that have enriched and deepened its symbolic meanings. Its mythic status has effortlessly adapted to the most modern semantic significances… New York’s future-looking vitality expressed in “The Big Apple”, used in book and film titles, and playing magic roles in children’s stories that have remained engraved in the hearts of every adult.

So, don’t miss Interpoma, at the Bolzano Fair from 4 to 6 November, where the history and lived experience of the apple will be the prelude to more practical and commercial considerations concerning a fruit that is becoming increasingly global: production is booming in countries like Russia, the Ukraine and Moldavia, while consumption is rocketing in new markets like North Africa and the Middle East.

www.interpoma.it

INTERPOMA: an outstanding benchmark for the entire apple economy

(Bolzano, 10 May 2010) Spring has come to the South Tyrol apple orchards. The season that is now beginning will eventually conclude with “Interpoma”, the International Trade Show devoted to apple cultivation, storage and marketing programmed from 4 to 6 November 2010. Since all the most important players in the sector will be taking part, there are great expectations for the novelties that will be presented on this occasion.
In mid-March, the first blossoms appeared in the apple orchards that cover 18.500 hectares of cultivatable terrain. The Laimburg Agrarian and Forestry Experimental Centre recorded that the Golden Delicious trees sprouted one week later compared to last year and four days after the 21st of March, the date taken as the average for many years.
From the apple marketing viewpoint, over the last two years (since the previous edition of Interpoma, in 2008), the South Tyrol apple industry has seen important changes and major novelties. This has been due above all to the renewal of marketing structures and the creation of new alliances, in response to the inexorably increasing importance of the food retail trade. Since 2008, the seven fruit cooperatives of the Val Venosta – reunited in the Vi.P Association, responsible for roughly one third of local produce – have been coordinating sales of their produce through a single sales point. As from this year there will also be intense synergetic collaboration between the 18 different cooperatives united under the VOG, Association of South Tyrolean Fruit Growers' Co-operatives. This organisation will sell their members’ combined output (roughly two thirds of South Tyrol’s apple harvest) through four Pools.
Inter-regional cooperation and a common approach to Eastern markets are at the basis of the organisation FROM, recently formed from synergies between VOG and Vi.P, both producers’ associations from the region of Trentino and the fruit processing company VOG Products.
In recent years the South Tyrol apple harvest has set one record after another. Various experts, however, believe that fruit and vegetable sector has probably reached its peak: as far as the current season goes, nonetheless, they declare themselves decidedly optimistic. According to observations made by the Fruit-growers and Vine-growers Advisory Centre, despite the record harvest of 1.1 million tons, the new spring blossoms are extremely promising.
From a cultivation and nursery viewpoint, there is a widespread appetite for change. South Tyrolean fruit growers have been showing courage in renewing their apples varieties. Up to just a few years ago the tendency was to grow established varieties, but now various new kinds of apple are making their appearance, like Modí® (CIV G198), Kanzi® (Nicoter) and Jazz® (Scifresh), in the conviction that in future these newcomers will open up new profitable horizons. On the other hand, the Pink Lady® remains consistently attractive to many growers.
In the field of agriculture – as in all economic activities – a crucial factor in achieving success is the ability to keep well informed. In this sense “Interpoma”, which will take place in the Bolzano Trade Fair complex from 4 to 6 November 2010, presents a perfect opportunity for all those operating in the apple sector, offering unequalled possibilities for updating knowledge and exchanging information.

Myths, territory and energy balance: apples on the agenda at Interpoma 2010

Apple specialists from around the globe will meet at Interpoma 2010 for the traditional conference “The Apple in the World”, which will take place at the Fiera Bolzano Convention Centre from 4 - 6 November 2010.

(Bolzano, 3 February 2010) Interpoma 2010, the seventh edition of the biennial international event dedicated to the apple, will be held at Fiera Bolzano in South Tyrol, Italy, from 4 - 6 November 2010. The trade fair will once again play host to “The Apple in the World”, the most influential conference in the sector organised by internationally renowned pomologist Kurt Werth in partnership with South Tyrolean fruit growers’ organisations.

Over the course of the three-day gathering, prominent international experts and industry representatives will meet to consider the future direction of the global apple industry. The main subject of discussion during the first session, on Thursday 4 November, will be changes in the market and production geography of apples. Besides focusing on commercial opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa, there will be a special insight into the new fruit-growing basins of southeast Europe, including the Caucasus, Krasnodar, the Don region, Moldova and Ukraine.

The theme of territory will also be central to the opening address on the Myth of the Apple. The presentation will analyse – from a historical and literary perspective – the significance attributed by different cultures to the fruit of sin, with the aim of elucidating the cultural connotations that make each region unique, akin to the concept of the wine-growing terroir.

The Residues, Carbon Footprint and Energy Balance of the apple sector will instead be the main topics of the second day on Friday 5 November. The floor will be opened to discussion between exponents in the domains of production and distribution, academics and representatives of environmental organisations on the hottest issues linked to food security and sustainability in the apple industry. The objective of the session is to build a platform of shared values between all the players in the supply chain, so as to consistently and efficiently meet the demands of consumers who are increasingly sensitive to the issues of food safety and the eco-compatibility of the products that they buy.

The wrap-up session will look at the collaboration between Interpoma and ISAFRUIT, the interdisciplinary project co-financed by the European Union that is aimed at increasing fruit consumption throughout the continent. During the session, representatives of the main research institutes involved in the project will present the findings of analyses into consumption, health, varietal research, post-harvest techniques and the environment in regard to the apple sector.
“With wide–ranging topics and high-profile keynote speakers, the international conference on the apple is one of the highlights of Interpoma,” commented Reinhold Marsoner, Managing Director of Fiera Bolzano. “Interpoma has always been an exhibition with a strong international focus and it has continued to expand its global reach over the years. During the previous edition held in 2008, the event welcomed 11,653 industry specialists, 40% of whom were overseas visitors from a total of 57 different countries”.

The apple goes international at Interpoma 2010

The apple industry under the spotlight at Interpoma 2010: production and marketing are the focus of an exhaustive programme of conferences and meetings to be held in Bolzano from 4 to 6 November 2010

The apple sector will take centre stage at Interpoma 2010, the seventh edition of the biennial international trade fair dedicated to the apple, which will be held at the Fiera Bolzano convention centre in Alto Adige, Italy, from 4 to 6 November 2010. The event attracts the industry’s foremost experts from the four corners of the globe here to this northern Italian province, the cradle of the European apple industry, providing an opportunity for trade professionals to assess the health of the sector, unveil exciting new produce, compare notes and do business. Interpoma aims to expand its international scope following the excellent results achieved during the 2008 edition, when foreign visitors accounted for 40% of the 11,653 turnout and official delegations attended from Germany, the United States, Israel, Japan and New Zealand. The 2010 edition of Interpoma will see the involvement of trade associations from all countries, to provide a broader and more informed view of the world apple industry.
As in previous editions, Interpoma 2010 will host top-level conferences and meetings tackling the most compelling issues concerning apple cultivation and marketing, in the presence of the most authoritative international experts. The agenda of the traditional conference “The Apple in the World” will include a meeting on apple cultivation, sales and marketing in Mediterranean countries, a congress focusing on pesticide residue and a session dealing with the industrial use of the apple as a raw material. Another highlight of interest to prospective participants is a presentation by ISAFRUIT (European Fruit Research Institutes Network), revealing the findings of a European study on apple production, storage and consumption conducted by leading research institutes, which will help to gauge the pulse of the world apple industry.

INTERPOMA 08 consolidates the event's international credentials

From 6 to 8 November Bolzano was transformed into the world capital of the apple. For the biennial edition of “INTERPOMA”, an influx of overseas trade professionals and experts from across the apple-growing sector converged on the Fiera Bolzano exhibition centre to explore the universe that revolves around this fruit

(Bolzano, 14 November 2008) Germany, the United States, Israel, Japan and New Zealand: trade specialists from the four corners of the globe came together for the sixth edition of “Interpoma”, the only exhibition in the world entirely dedicated to the apple industry. From 6 to 8 November the halls of the Fiera Bolzano convention centre welcomed almost 4,600 overseas visitors, 40% of the 11,653 attendees who explored the 17,000 square metres of exhibition space to discover the many facets of the apple sector.
There was also an international theme to the long-running conference “The Apple in the World”, which attracted 900 participants during the three-day tradeshow. The event was a resounding success, with a succession of globally renowned speakers taking turns to address the audience in the centre’s Elena Walch Hall, on a number of extremely topical and interesting topics. The conference was opened by Philippe Binard of Freshfel/WAPA, who presented data concerning world apple production and placed particular importance on local growers’ networks such as those in South Tyrol, one of the world’s largest apple producing regions with an annual harvest of over 900,000 tonnes. The first day’s agenda also centred on Russia and Asia, two rapidly expanding markets which are increasingly a target for export driven producer. “Harmonisation and new pesticide residue regulations” was the topic of the second day, which registered a peak audience of 370 attendees, while the organic apple market was the focus of the final session.
“Each successive edition of “Interpoma” further establishes its reputation as an international exhibition”, affirmed Gernot Rössler, president of Fiera Bolzano. “It is a steadily growing event which this year has taken a giant step forward, both in terms of its international scope and as regards the number of visitors. In 2006, 31.7% of the total audience came from abroad, including Europe and the rest of the world, whereas this year that figure rose to almost 40%, with visitors from 54 different countries,” explained Mr. Rössler, proud of the success that the event has achieved.
There were also numerous favourable comments among the exhibitors. Gerhard Dichgans, director of the VOG Association, the largest organisation of apple growers in South Tyrol, declared: "This year we have also seen an increase in overseas visitors and delegations. Every year the high professional and scientific profile of the conference attracts hundreds of experts from within the sector, confirming that “Interpoma” has, over the years, become the international benchmark event for the apple sector".
“Interpoma 08” drew a highly specialised audience, with 91.6% of the turnout consisting of trade visitors. “One important finding of the survey carried out by Fiera Bolzano among attendees is that 54.8% of those interviewed declared the intention to do business with the exhibitors they contacted,” affirmed Reinhold Marsoner, managing director of Fiera Bolzano. The satisfaction rating was also high: of the sample of 261 visitors interviewed as part of the Fiera Bolzano survey, 100% expressed a positive opinion of the exhibition, with 73.6% describing it as good, 16.5% excellent and 9.9% satisfactory.

During the final day of 'The Apple in the World' convention, held from the 6-8 November at 'Interpoma,' the current situation for the organic apple growing sector will be tackled head on

The sixth edition of Interpoma will be held in Bolzano, Alto Adige (Italy), from the 6-8 November 2008. It is the only fair in the world dedicated to the production, storage and marketing of apples. The fair will conclude with a focus on organic apples. The last day of this convention, which will take place during the three days of the show, will be dedicated to the universe of growing apples without the use of chemical pesticides or soluble fertilizers. This topic will be addressed during the seminar 'The Production and Market of Organic Apples' which will be moderated by Josef Dalla Via, director of the Laimburg Center of Experimentation.
In the world of business and finance organic agriculture turns over 28 billion Euros, of which 15 billion euros are generated in Europe alone. Italy ranks number five in the world and first in Europe for organic production (followed by Spain, Germany, and Great Britain) with 1.15 million hectares of land under cultivation and 50,276 workers directly employed in the sector*.
Included within these figures are those of the apple producing sector with 950 organic Italian apple producers, generating a total of 75,000 tons of organic apples from 3,009 hectares of land, of which 938 are in the process of conversion to organic production**.
Numerous topics will be discussed on Saturday, November 8. Among the line-up experts to take the stage here will be Jeanette Huber of Zukunfstinstitut Horx Gmbh (Frankfurt) who will examine the subject of 'Organic Consumption - Fashion or Trend for the Future?' Following this presentation are Dietmar Franzelin (Director of the Südtirol BIO Cooperative) and Gerhard Eberhöfer (Director of Val Venosta BIO) who will elaborate on the current state of organic apple production and marketing in Alto Adige, which harvests 29,000 tons*** every year, making it the foremost European producer.
The market for organic apples in Germany and the U.S. will be brought to the roundtable by Antje Kasbohm of ZMP and David Granatstein of the Washington Apple University of Wenatchee. Marco Schlüter of IFOAM EU Groupe (Brussels) will cover the topic of 'Community Regulations for the Production of Organic Apples and their impact on the Production of Organic Apples'.
Learn more about the trends and developments of the organic apple market on the 8th of November in Bolzano,

Variety plus innovation spells success for apple market

The first day of the conference "The Apple in the World" at "Interpoma 2008" will provide an overview of the world apple market, with a special focus on Italy and the South Tyrol. While Golden Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith and Red Delicious are this year's best sellers, the outlook is also encouraging for three new varieties.

The international apple market will dominate the agenda on the first day of "The Apple in the World". The annual international conference is being hosted by Interpoma, the international trade show for apple growing, storage and marketing, which will take place from 6 to 8 November at Fiera Bolzano in South Tyrol, Italy.
"One of the focuses of the conference will be the world apple market, especially the Asian, Russian and European markets," says conference organiser Kurt Werth, a global authority on the apple sector. "It is generally accepted that in Europe, fruit growers' organisations play an extremely significant role. For them business is booming right now, due in no small measure to marketing policies introduced by the European Union, which has also implemented important strategies for the prevention and professional management of sales crises," he concludes.
Over 63 million tonnes of apples were produced worldwide in 2006*, of which 55% were grown in Asia. Europe was the world's second most productive area with 22% of the total harvested volume, while North America accounted for 15%. Among European nations, Italy was the top producer with an output of 2,142,000 tonnes**. Of this total, 46% (978,000 tonnes)*** were harvested in South Tyrol, the cradle of the European apple industry with 18,000 hectares of cultivated area.
The continuous replanting of apple orchards to keep pace with production and market demands, variety renewal and attention paid to the most sought-after varieties: these are the factors which have made South Tyrolean apple growers the global leaders in their field. Over the last few years in South Tyrol, around 800 hectares of apple orchards have been replaced with the market's most popular varieties. Last year, for example, 40% of the new orchards were planted with Golden Delicious and 15% with Gala. The Granny Smith and Red Delicious varieties are also favoured by apple growers, each accounting for 11% of new plantations.
Recently, the South Tyrol Association for Variety Renewal, formed by the Association of South Tyrol Fruit Growers' Co-operatives (VOG) and the Cooperative Association of Val Venosta (VIP), in conjunction with the Advisory Board for Fruit and Wine Cultivation and the Laimburg Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, have been finalising plans to replant orchards with three new varieties: MODÌ® (CIV G198), KANZI® (Nicoter) and JAZZ® (Scifresh).
The characteristics and potential of these three new varieties will be presented on 6 November at the international exhibition centre in Bolzano, capital of the province of South Tyrol, during the conference "The Apple in the World".

The world's only trade fair dedicated to apple growing, storage and marketing is already into its sixth year. The event takes place from 6 to 8 November at Fiera Bolzano in South Tyrol, the cradle of the European apple industry. The supporting programme includes the international conference "The Apple in the World".

(Bolzano, 11 June 2008) From 6 to 8 November the halls of the Fiera Bolzano exhibition centre will open their doors to the sixth edition of Interpoma, the biennial international trade fair which focuses exclusively on the growing, storage and marketing of apples. The event represents the ideal forum for discovering the latest trends, getting informed about new offers and products, doing business deals and meeting the world's top apple industry experts.
The trade fair's supporting programme includes the now traditional international conference "The Apple in the World", whose organiser Kurt Werth is a leading authority in the apple sector. The conference will cover a number of topical issues including "Harmonization and new pesticide residue regulations", "Trends in organic apple production and marketing" and "Restrictions and barriers in the world apple market". With wide-ranging topics and globally renowned speakers, the conference is one of the main tools with which Interpoma aims to expand its international audience.
The only trade fair in the world which is dedicated to the apple industry, Interpoma focuses mainly on three topics: apple growing, storage and marketing. The 15,000 m2 exhibition area provides ample space in which to explore innovations and trends in sorting technology, packing machinery and materials. Visitors will also be able to browse state-of-the-art drive systems and equipment for tree care, soil care and transport, as well as devices and materials for tree nurseries and harvesting. As regards storage technology, Interpoma 2008 will showcase the latest refrigeration systems, measuring and regulation systems, internal transport systems, prefabricated units for construction, insulating materials and storage hygiene solutions.
The attendance figures for the last fair underline both the importance of the exhibition and its dynamic, international appeal: 9,646 specialist visitors from 38 countries and 273 exhibiting companies, a third of them from abroad, attended Interpoma 2006.
As the largest contiguous apple growing area in the world, with 18,000 hectares of cultivated area, South Tyrol represents the ideal location for this biennial trade fair, which has become an unmissable event for operators within the sector.

Tried and True Varieties Still Number One with New Plantings

In spite of globalization, South Tyrol's fruit growers are among the leaders in the world, yet they have been depending upon established varieties. Therefore, the most commonly planted apples for this season will once again be Golden Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, and Red Delicious. For several years now, apple producers have been waiting for an alternative to the old varieties with their sure yields. Three new apple varieties have just been introduced.

In recent years, nearly 800 hectares (2,000 acres) of apple orchards have been replaced in South Tyrol, the world's largest contiguous apple growing area. That represents a turnover rate of around four percent, a trend that looks like it will continue in the coming year. "The turnover rate for this year is comparable to that of previous years and will not be substantially greater," estimates expert Harald Weis of the South Tyrol Advisory Board for Fruit and Wine Cultivation. In recent years, fruit growers have relied upon tried and true varieties in the replacement of orchards. Last year, for example, nearly 40% of the new orchards were planted with Golden Delicious. In 15% of the orchards, the choice was made for Gala, while apple producers decided on Granny Smith and Red Delicious at a rate of nearly 11% each.
In order to achieve a high level of net output and to remain competitive, more orchards need to be replaced, Weis reckons. "Operations that do not make any investments in this regard over the years will soon end up being obsolete and in need of modernization," the expert warns. He recommends a replanting rate of five to six percent, depending upon the zone of cultivation. There continues to be great interest among South Tyrol's apple producers in the variety Cripps Pink (Pink Lady®). Last year, 28 hectares (69 acres) were planted with this variety, and approximately the same amount will be added this year, too. But the scarce availability of plants is not putting the farmers in high spirits and is putting the brakes on greater development.
Recently, the legal requirements have been successfully fulfilled to plant three new varieties: MODÌ® (CIV G198), KANZI® (Nicoter), and JAZZ® (Scifresh). This has been carried out by the South Tyrol Variety Innovation Consortium - a joint platform between the two marketing organizations Association of South Tyrol Fruitgrowers Cooperatives and the Vinschgau Valley Producers - the South Tyrol Fruit and Winegrowing Consulting Center, and the Technical College for Fruticulture, Viticulture, and Horticulture in Laimburg. Thus the wait for alternative varieties has finally come to an end.
"Because of the good color formation, the scab-resistant Modí® variety could represent an interesting choice for the cultivation areas in the valley floor," says the head of the Variety Consortium, Kurt Werth, "while in the good color areas, which in South Tyrol are in particular the hilly areas, Kanzi® could represent a new alternative." Beginning in 2010, apple producers may plant the Jazz® variety. "Our experience with this up to now is still limited at this point," explains Werth, "and we are aware of the difficulties of this variety. But the producers' interest in new, internationally familiar varieties is great. And with this variety, the marketing companies also see an interesting expansion of the level of varieties."
The most promising new varieties will be presented at the very latest by the international tradeshow Interpoma, which will be held at the Bolzano Exhibition Center in the capital of South Tyrol (Alto Adige), Italy from November 6 to 8, 2008. Expectations are high that in the future, they will represent an interesting economic perspective.
