The fourth edition of Alpitec China ran from February 22 to 25, 2012 along with ISPO Beijing, the tradeshow organized by Messe München regarding sports, fashion, and lifestyle brands for winter sports. They were held at the exhibition center of the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing and have been evaluated by exhibitors and organizers as a complete success. Some 24,500 visitors were recorded at the fourth edition of the double tradeshow, representing an increase of 38% over the previous year.
A total of 353 exhibitors distributed over 34,000 square meters (366,000 square feet) participated in ISPO Beijing and Alpitec China. The double tradeshow has gone on to become the most important platform for the winter sports sector in Asia.
Pavilion 1 of the convention center in Beijing was reserved for Alpitec China, where sixty-five exhibitors from nine countries presented new releases and the latest achievements in the area of mountain and winter technologies. Companies from Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the United States were all represented. Around a quarter of them were companies from China, but companies from South Tyrol also had a strong presence at the group stand organized by the EOS, Export Organisation South Tyrol of the Bolzano Chamber of Commerce. The products that were presented ranged from cable cars and chair lifts to snowmaking systems, equipment for the grooming of ski slopes and for the care of skiers, accessories and safety systems for the ski runs, and consulting and services for investments.
In speaking of the tradeshow, Norbert Meier of Wintersteiger says, “Our company has been there since the first edition of Alpitec China, because this event gives us the unique opportunity to get in contact with the greats of the winter technology sector.”
Joseph Yu of MWI, M Waily International Canada, is satisfied with the contacts established at Alpitec. “For a company like ours that is active internationally, Alpitec offers the possibility of entering the Chinese market. China’s winter sports sector is growing explosively, and Alpitec is the right platform for establishing contact with the right people.”
Mirco Demetz of demacLenko says, “We have been represented on the Chinese market since as early as 2005, and we see a great potential for the future. Alpitec China represents the ideal platform for the technology sector in winter sports and for our own products. The winter sports sector in China is growing. Different projects for accelerating this have already begun.”
Thomas Oswald of Skidata confirms that Alpitec China represents the right platform for entering the Chinese market. “We are also represented at Alpitec China this year, since we were very satisfied with the results from last year. We were able to position ourselves on the Chinese market, and we have the right preconditions for a good sales year.”
Yanh Li of the Doppelmayr company emphasizes, “Alpitec China is ‘the’ platform for winter technology and sports, and for that reason Doppelmayr, as the leading company in this sector, of course cannot be missing.”
Jean Bijuet of Johnsons Controls Neige confirmed, “The Chinese market is growing, and we are sure that it is going to stay that way. As experts in snowmaking systems, we of course have to be here, in order to also have the possibility of counteracting the natural lack of snow in China with our systems. Within a few years, many of the projects that we have launched will certainly bear fruit, and additional ski areas and resorts will be developed.”
The tradeshow was accompanied by the international “Asia Pacific Snow Conference”. Over a hundred participants in the sector registered. One topic that was presented at the conference and gone into detail was the talk by Young Ho Seo from Korea, who examined the risks, but above all the new opportunities, that will result from the Winter Olympic games that will be held in Pyeong Chang in 2018. Marco Ryhner of Switzerland spoke about the management of tourism destinations using the example of the ecovillage “Sino Swiss” in the Wangping area, around 50 km. (30 miles) from Beijing. In addition, Jennifer Rowan of the trade journal SAM spoke about the top ten activities that also make money for mountain sports resorts in the summer. And Ping He picked up this topic and spoke about the potential of ski resorts beyond the winter and the snow.
In order to also bring South Tyrol know-how and European experience to Asia, the forum “Ski Service Professional Courses” was also held in Pavilion 1 of Alpitec China. This was a discussion and information platform for those active in the winter sports sector. In 2010 and 2011, these were dedicated to the topic of the care and maintenance of sports equipment. This year, within the framework of “South Tyrol – Alpine Rescue Performance”, the Cluster Alpine Safety of TIS innovation park and South Tyrols mountain rescue service (BRD), in cooperation with the EOS Export Organisation South Tyrol of the Bolzano Chamber of Commerce, gave several demonstrations throughout the day of the evacuation of a chairlift, which was made available by the Doppelmayr company.
An interview with Young Ho Seo
The Olympic Games represent a significant opportunity for the hosting cities because of the results and the return on investment. By presenting major sports events, a city has the possibility to promote local identity as well as to stimulate economic growth.
The Asia Pacific Snow Conference, taking place on Thursday, February 23 at Alpitec China/ISPO Beijing, will dedicate one area of focus to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games which will be hosted by the city of PyeongChang, South Korea, The lecture will be presented by Young Ho Seo, president of Eastern Partners, a company playing an important role in mediating between the city government and the Olympic Committee. “The PyeongChang Games will definitely represent a good opportunity to upgrade the area and all of Korea, just as the 1988 Olympics did,” he explains. “I believe that Korea can expect another leap forward. By participating in Alpitec China with a focus on the 2018 Winter Games, I expect to explore China’s interest in winter sports and the Winter Olympics, as well as the business opportunities for winter technology and winter sports in Asia.” Alpitec China is the best place to meet experts on the most up-to-date topics on Asia regarding know-how on investment, tourism strategies, and snow .
The Press Office of the Exhibition Center of Bolzano/Bozen has provided a preview to the event by interviewing Young Ho Seo:

During your speech at the Asian Pacific Snow Congress at Alpitec China, your focus on PyeongChang 2018 will center on the general background of tourism management, especially winter tourism. How are you going to approach this theme?
I am going to make a presentation about The 2018 Winter Olympic Game and the Korean ski resort industry at the congress. With regard to winter tourism, I would like to focus on the effect that the 2018 Games will have on the industry and the trends from foreign skiers from Russia, South Asia, China etc.
The master plan for the Winter Games centers around the Alpensia Cluster in PyeongChang, the Coastal Cluster in the coastal city of Gangneung, and two independent stadiums at the Bogwang and Jungbong ski resorts. What will be the investment of the Korean government in the interested areas? And are investments planned by private players?
PyeongChang will have a total of sports venues . PyeongChang’s plan is based upon two clusters, the Alpensia cluster and the Coastal cluster.
The Alpensia Cluster is the focal point of the Winter Games plan and includes sliding events and most of the venues for snow events, as well as the Olympic Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and Media Village, and the MMC and the IOC hotels.
The Coastal Cluster, in the Eastern coastal area, will be the site for all ice events and house the secondary Olympic Village and Media Village. Jungbong, a stand-alone venue, will hold the alpine speed events. Bokwang Phoenix Park, also a stand-alone venue, will host the snowboard and freestyle skiing events.
Seven of the existing venues were newly built or upgraded from the 1999 Gangwon Asian Winter Games. The seven existing venues have already hosted various international winter sports events and have been certified by each international federation and outfitted to meet or exceed Olympic standards. The remaining six venues will be designed to ensure that they remain sustainable Olympic legacies, each having specific plans in place for post-Games use. All venues will comply with the IOC’s “Technical Manual on Design Standards for Competition Venues” and FIS requirements. Capacity was determined based on the population of PyeongChang and vicinity. All of the venues will be linked to a three-pronged transport network that includes expressways, national highways, and railways.
The Jungbong alpine skiing venue (downhill – length 3,360 meters / Super G – length 3,120 meters) was designed to ensure world-class conditions, based upon the expert opinion of FIS officials, although there have been some protests by environmentalists against the plan to set up the skiing venue in the Jundbong.
The preliminary design for the venue has been completed. After the 2018 Winter Games, the venue will be developed into a leisure facility with private funding, and it will remain as an alpine skiing (speed) venue.
The figure skating/short track speed skating venue will be built in the existing sports complex in the Coastal Cluster and will feature separate ice floors for competition and for training. Slides of venues and procurement process are attached separately.
The investment for most of the new venues comes from the local government.
Name of local government : Gangwon province
Name of new company : Gangwondo Development Corporation
Total investment amount: around 1.1 billion Euros
Current total debt: around 500 million Euros
The debt problem is a big burden to the local government.
What is the current situation of the winter tourism industry in South Korea? Is it possible to expect a positive trend, like the one in China, with regard to the affinity of people to winter sports resorts in the next ten to twenty years?
Season Number of skiers Rate of increase
2000/2001 4,005,000
2001/2002 4,557,000 14%
2002/2003 4,754,000 4%
2004/2005 5,408,000 14%
2005/2006 5,692,000 5%
2006/2007 6,033,000 6%
2007/2008 6,563,000 -1%
2008/2009 6,563,000 -1%
2009/2010 6,636,000 1%
2010/2011 6,479,000 -2%
The trend of the South Korean ski industry is stable, although somewhat static in the past few years.
This year is the first year after the winning the chance to host the 2018 Games. We need to evaluate the skiing industry trends very carefully this season, because we expect a boom in winter tourism as a result of hosting the 2018 Games.
In the last year there has been a substantial increase in foreign skiers in Korean ski resorts, and most of them are from Southeast Asia, China, Russia, Japan etc. We expect that the 2018 Games will provide another good opportunity to host foreign skiers.
How will PyeongChang’s city identity be affected? What are going to be the main changes? Which will be the economic value created by the event? What are the challenges and risks?
At this time, the upcoming organizing committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games is working on every detail in order to better prepare for the Winter Olympics.
PyeongChang’s organizing team needs to be concerned with effective and strong security measures. Since construction of the venues and main facilities are not yet complete, the PyeongChang organizing team should consider all of the details carefully.
According to the Hyundai Economic Research Institute, nearly 230,000 jobs will be created and approximately 390,000 winter sports fans will visit PyeongChang during the event. Direct and indirect economic benefits combined will be worth approximately 65 trillion Won (around 40 billion Euros). According to the report, investments in venues, roads and other transport infrastructure, and hotels will are planned.
The official forecasts indicate that international and domestic tourists will spend approximately 1.2 trillion won (around 800 million Euros) on dining, hotels, and other amenities during their stay in PyeongChang .
The report also stated that the media exposure of the city during the period of the event will help the city promote tourism after the Olympic Games, an opening to the Korean economy that also occurred because of other major international sporting events, such as the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 2002 World Cup. In 1985, Korea’s annual exports reached approximately $30 billion, but they more than doubled after the Summer Olympics in 1988. The PyeongChang Games will definitely be a good chance to upgrade the local area and all of Korea, just as the 1988 Olympics did. I believe that the Korean people can expect another leap forward.
Despite the positive prospects for the Winter Games economic effect, there is the danger such prospects being too rosy to have a real economic effect. Realistic problems remain which warrant serious consideration. We will face pressure to continue to make proper use of the facilities, amenities, and accommodations after the Olympics. Otherwise, these will become a headache to the local economy.
What do you expect from visiting Alpitec China 2012?
I expect to explore how the Chinese are interested in winter sports and the Winter Olympics games. Also, I would like to explore the business opportunities between Chinese and foreign companies with regard to winter technology and winter sports.
For four days, from February 22 to 25, 2012 “Alpitec China” will cover everything surrounding mountain and winter technologies, while "ISPO Beijing" will once again focus on sports, fashion, and lifestyle brands.
Bolzano, November 2011 – The double tradeshow “Alpitec China/ISPO Beijing” will once again be at the service of the winter sports sector in Asia, this time for one more day than last year. The new dates are from Wednesday, February 22 to Saturday, February 25, 2012, in order to adequately do justice to the demand by ISPO exhibitors.
And the date for the Asia Pacific Snow Conference (APSC) has also been set: the conference will take place on Thursday, February 23, 2012. The focus will include the 2018 Winter Olympic Games at the Yongpyong ski area in Pyeongchang South Korea and the challenges and opportunities associated with it for the winter sports industry and tourism. The featured speaker will be the president of the South Korean investment company Eastern Partners, Mr. Young Ho Seo. Also on the agenda will be the topic of safety on the ski slopes and the trends in the snowboard area in Asia.
In 2011, on a total exhibition space of 30,000 square meters (323,000 square feet), some 276 exhibitors presented themselves at “ISPO” and sixty exhibitors at “Alpitec China”, hailing from Germany, Italy, China, France, Austria, the USA, Canada, and Korea. The double tradeshow is Asia’s leading business-to-business winter sports platform. This year, it was enjoyed by an extraordinary crowd of no fewer than 17,700 visitors over the course of three days. The exhibitors were wildly enthusiastic and are convinced that China is the market of the future. This is also reflected by the pace at which the exhibitor confirmations which have been arriving to the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center since July 2011.
“Alpitec China” smoothes the way for companies in the areas of winter technology, snowmaking, cable cars and chair lifts, and ski area equipment for penetrating the Asian market. Preparations are already running along at full speed.

The third edition of “Alpitec China” took place from February 23 to 25, 2011 together with “ispo china” in the Exhibition Center of the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing with total satisfaction among Alpitec China’s sixty exhibitors.
On a total exhibition space of 30,000 square meters (323,000 square feet), 276 exhibitors presented themselves at “ispo china”, as did sixty exhibitors at “Alpitec China” hailing from Germany, Italy, China, France, Austria, the USA, Canada, and Korea. The double tradeshow “ispo china/Alpitec China” is Asia’s leading business-to-business winter sports platform. This year, it was enjoyed by an extraordinary crowd of 17,700 visitors over the course of three days. The exhibitors were wildly enthusiastic and are convinced that China is the market of the future.
“We have been an exhibitor since 2009 at Alpitec China, which is the most important meeting point for the winter sports industry in Asia,” emphasized Paul Bojarski, Mountain Designer and Consultant for MAS LTD. “We met with many of our customers and were able to record an increase in visitors to our stand of at least thirty percent. Even the three days of the tradeshow were not enough this year for us to be able to speak in detail with all of the potential customers. Alpitec China is a must for entry into the Chinese market.”
“We are surprised about the completely positive feedback which our customers have been showing more and more for our company and our products,” said Markus Siegrist, Manager of Leitner Asia Ltd. “In three days, we were able to have discussions about a dozen potential projects and we are wildly enthusiastic how much Alpitec China has grown in comparison to the previous year. The investment in this tradeshow appearance more than paid for itself.”
“We experienced outstanding feedback on the part of the visitors!” explained Cesare Locatelli, Sales Area Manger der Prinoth AG. “It is possible to meet with all of the important opinion leaders in the winter sports sector at Alpitec China 2011. Even though the timing at the end of February was not necessarily especially favorable for the winter sports industry, the tradeshow nevertheless scored a big hit since it was held from Wednesday to Friday, days on which ski area owners and managers in China go on business trips.”
The product show by exhibitors was accompanied by the international “Asia Pacific Snow Conference”, which was well attended by around a hundred participants. It was divided into two thematic focuses: one part was dedicated to the “hardware” in winter tourism and the ski industry, while in the second part of the conference, it was the “software” that was addressed, with topics centering on quality management in ski areas. On all three days of the tradeshow, Dino Palmi and Roberto Leone from the Italian Association of Ski Service Personnel offered instruction to around thirty budding ski service workers in Asia on the tasks of proper ski preparation.
Dino Palmi talks with Katja Sanin, press officer of Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center. Since 1997, Dino Palmi has been president of the Italian association of ski service technicians “Associazione Italiana Ski Man”, which is working with the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center to offer the ‘Ski Service Professional Course’ for service technicians from February 23 to 25, 2011, within the framework of ‘ispo china/Alpitec China’ in Beijing.
How long have you been offering courses for service technicians?
The school in Cossato in the province of Biella in Piemonte was opened in 1995, and the idea behind it was to raise the level of professionalism in the ski service field. We were very surprised by the demand, since in addition to the actual ski service technicians, a great many hobby skiers and newcomers were also very interested in the subject.
Is the training for service technicians in stores and ski rental shops the same as that for service technicians in the World Cup?
No, we offer different courses for various target groups. Courses lasting one or two days for private individuals, and a course for professional continuing education which is currently four days, but we’re planning on extending it to five. In view of the great demand, we’ve created a two-week course for both service technicians and people new to the profession. That course is being financed by the European Social Fund, and it provides training and continuing education in this vocational category.
Where do the participants in the course come from?
From all over Italy, but also from Japan, Spain, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Spain was very interested in this training model, and the result is that there is now a school of this kind under our brand and with our know-how in Catalonia, too.
Aren’t you afraid of passing on this know-how to the competition?
(laughs) No, there really aren’t any secrets in this profession. Ski preparation first and foremost involves skill in the craft.
How does someone become a good service technician?
It’s a question of dedication. It requires a lot of passion, and of course experience matters, too.
Are there women in this profession?
Yes, there are women in this field, and I have to say that they’re very good, because the fact that they have less physical strength than men means that they work with more sensitivity.
How important is the cooperation with the athletes? In the World Cup, there are nothing but outstanding skiers competing. Isn't it often the case that the equipment or the service technician decides the race?
A number of factors decide whether the outcome is victory or defeat, but the cooperation between the athletes and technicians is, of course, very important, just as it is everywhere in racing sports. For example, when Valentino Rossi wins a race, he always thanks his team and his technicians. Unfortunately, in skiing sports the technicians often exist in the shadows. If a skier wins, he takes the credit for it, and if he loses, he blames the equipment. While the athletes relax in the sauna, the technicians are hard at work on the athletes’ skis in the basements of the hotels, and unfortunately they more often get criticism than praise.
In 2010, a course for ski service technicians was offered at ‘ispo china/Alpitec China’ for the first time. How much interest was there?
That was a very exciting experience, because we didn’t know exactly how much interest there would be. On the first day of the tradeshow, there were thirty participants, but we didn't know how we would continue to be received. We didn't know whether there was interest enough to continue for the remaining two days or whether we'd be standing there all alone. When five more participants came on the second day than were there on the first, we were very happy. The initiative was very well received, and at times we were surrounded by crowds of people. Since everything had to be translated into Chinese, it was three very nice but strenuous days for the participants. By the end of the first course, we were able to present certificates to thirty-five participants who work at ski resorts throughout China.
Are tradeshows an ideal platform for initiatives like this?
Yes, by all means. Because the product by itself is often not enough; the know-how has to be passed on, too. Along these lines, I'd like to say that we owe our thanks to the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center, and above all to Erwin Stricker, who supported this initiative before untimely passing away in 2010. All we had to do was just our own work. The Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center took care of the organization, with Erwin Stricker having pulled all the right strings for that.

Three months before the third edition of “Alpitec China”, numerous European companies in the winter sports and technology industries have set their course in the direction of Beijing. Instead of March, “Alpitec China” the International Tradeshow for Mountain and Winter Technologies, will take place together with “ispo china” from February 23 to 25, 2011 for the first time in the new exhibition center of the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing.
Bolzano, December 2010 – The double tradeshow “ispo china/Alpitec China” is Asia’s leading business-to-business winter sports platform. Pavilion 1, which is devoted to “Alpitec China”, is nearly fully booked, since numerous global players in the area of alpine technologies believe in the potential of the Asian market for winter sports. International interest in the event is high. The exhibition categories of “Alpitec China” comprise investment consulting and resort design, ski lift and snowmaking facilities, machines for snow preparation and maintenance, snow groomers, and slope equipment. In addition to companies from the USA, Canada, China, Germany, and Italy, group stands will be representing providers from South Tyrol, France, Austria, and Scandinavia at “Alpitec China 2001”.
With the success of the second edition last year, the event secured its position in the international tradeshow calendar. The product show by exhibitors will be accompanied by the international “Asia Pacific Snow Conference”. The conference is divided into two thematic focuses: one part is dedicated to the “hardware” in winter tourism and the ski industry. Topics such as investment, tourism strategies, infrastructure design, and resort management are addressed. In the second part of the conference, the discussion centers on the “software”, with topics regarding quality management in ski areas. These range from event organization to safety management to the organization of ski schools.
All three days of the “Alpitec China” tradeshow will be accompanied by the practice-related “Ski Man Course” informational event. After meeting with great approval in 2010 with ski area operators from all over China, the Italian Association of Ski Service Personnel will once again offer courses in 2011 along with the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center and the Munich International Trade Fairs in proper ski grooming.

At “Alpitec China” from February 23 to 25, 2011, supply and demand come together in the area of mountain and winter technologies. The goal of the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center is not only to organize events in its own facilities, but also to bring tradeshows to where they have a market. Giants in the field from Central Europe, including companies from South Tyrol, have been active in the Chinese market for several years now. And thanks to the tireless efforts of the ambassador for skiing sports in China, Erwin Stricker, their tradeshow presence is now bearing its first fruit.
Thanks to a contact made at the “Alpitec” tradeshow in Bolzano, ex-ski racer and entrepreneur Erwin Stricker had signed a contract for winter technology with the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. In order to keep the unrest under control in the area with around 30 million inhabitants and fourteen linguistic minorities, the central government decided to invest around 70 billion euros in the economic structure in coming years. Aside from the size of the country, China has geographic similarities with South Tyrol. And in the Altai Mountains of the hinterlands of Asia – from which, according to experts, Indo-Europeans brought skiing through Central Europe and into Scandinavia during their migration more than 8,000 years ago – the largest ski area in China is to be built.
After the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, some state-run ski areas were built in Northern China which were used exclusively by professional athletes for training purposes. Skiing as a sport of the masses and private ski areas have only been around in the country since 1996. Skiing sports in China attract above all young people between the ages of twenty and forty. And that is precisely the age group in the Middle Kingdom with the greatest purchasing power, as indicated by the study carried out by the market research institute McKinsey & Company. Therefore, well-to-do consumers in China are on average twenty years younger than their counterparts in the USA and Japan. For decades, the word “vacation” was a foreign word for the Chinese. Only since 1999 has the central government allowed every working person to take three established weeks of vacation per year. As a result, there is a very high concentration of vacationers, which leads to problems with infrastructure and a shortage of personnel at tourist destinations. The high season for domestic tourism in China is between April and October. In order to counteract the strong dependency on season – since up to now, summer tourism has predominated – and in order to increase the net output in the tourism sector, provinces and regions in China are also attempting to make their tourist resources usable during wintertime.
The most significant winter sports destination in China with the highest number of ski areas is the province of Heilongjiang which, as a result of its geographical position, has a lengthy tradition when it comes to winter tourism. In second place is the aforementioned Xinjiang Autonomous Region, with which there are established and well-tended economic contacts, thanks in no small part to the events of the Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center.

“Alpitec China 2011” will incorporate a number of changes. The Tradeshow for Mountain and Winter Technologies 2011 will take place at the same time as “ispo china”, the leading tradeshow for sports articles in the Asia-Pacific region – both will be held from February 23 to 25.
Bolzano, June 2010 - The start date is new, and the duration is as well. Since Saturday is one of the strongest days of the week for sales amongst retailers, the dual tradeshow will henceforth be held from Wednesday to Friday. With this step, our partner, Munich International Trade Fairs, is responding to the desire of merchants throughout the whole industry to make use of the entire duration of the tradeshow and, at the same time, to spend the most important day of the week at their businesses.
On top of that, “ispo china/Alpitec China” will move to the new site of the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing. The CNCC was built for the 2008 Olympic Games and meets the most modern standards. With two new hotels integrated into the site, and the subway connection in immediate proximity, exhibitors and visitors are guaranteed the best possible service and thus a pleasant stay during the tradeshow.
“This year’s ispo china/Alpitec China was a major success for us, with a visitor satisfaction rate of 90%,” said Gernot Rössler, President of Messe Bozen AG. “We were able to increase both the number of exhibitors and the exhibition space at Alpitec China. We are particularly proud of the high level of participation on the part of Chinese exhibitors, who have shown us that the time has arrived for technological know-how in the winter sports sector.” The product presentation of the double tradeshow will be rounded out by the Asia Snow Pacific Conference (APSC) featuring practice-related informational events and international speakers addressing the latest topics of the Chinese winter sports industry. The 2009 edition marked the first ski-servicing course, at which participants from a great many areas of China were instructed in the techniques of ski preparation. This double tradeshow has now definitively come into its own with a considerable increase in visitors of 21% relative to 2009. And 86% of the visitors stated that they also wished to attend the tradeshow in 2011.
After three successful days in the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing, “Alpitec China 2010” closed its doors with a new visitor record that was achieved along with “ispo china”. A full 16,300 visitors from the sector acquired an overview of the latest winter trends in the Asia-Pacific region at the double tradeshow that ran from March 4 to 6, 2010.
(Bolzano, Italy, March 11, 2010) “Alpitec China was a great success for us,” said Gernot Rössler, president of Fiera Bolzano S.p.A./Messe Bozen AG, who was on site along with the project team.“We were able to increase both the number of exhibitors and the exhibition space. We are particularly proud of the high level of participation on the part of Chinese exhibitors, who have shown us that the time has arrived for technological know-how in the winter sports sector. The product presentation was rounded out by practice-related information events, such as China’s first Ski Man course.”
The comprehensive accompanying events with specialized conferences such as the Asia Pacific Snow Conference (APSC) and other events in conjunction with this double tradeshow make it one of the most important platforms for communications and networking for the winter sports sector in the Asian market. With a considerable increase in visitors of 21% with respect to the previous year, “ispo china/Alpitec China” was successful in making a clear breakthrough with the Asian market. General satisfaction also prevailed with the exhibitors:
“ispo china/Alpitec China is a great tradeshow with very many visitors,” said Mirco Demetz of Demac GmbH. “China is a very good market for us with an enormous potential for the winter sports industry. Interest in skiing sports is very high.”
“The double tradeshow of ALPITEC and ispo china has special significance, since it is currently the only B2B tradeshow in the sector in China,” stressed Christian Amtmann, editor of the international cable car magazine ISR. “For us, the clientele in China is very important, and for that reason, professional tradeshows such as this one are indispensable for promoting our products and know-how. The exchange is important for both sides, since China is the only market with large growth.”
Also enthusiastic about the crowd of visitors was the head of LEITNER Asia Ltd., Markus Sigrist: “It is a pleasure for me to see how the ski industry is developing in China. Along with the growing interest in skiing sports, our opportunities are also growing to expand in the Chinese market.”
Bolzano, January 2010 – From March 4 to 6, 2010, “Alpitec China”, the International Tradeshow for Mountain and Winter Technologies“ will be held for the second time in Beijing together with “ispo china”. The year 2009 was marked by a global economic crisis, although China intervened on a massive scale in order to alleviate its consequences. The economic program was expanded, and the Chinese economy received a boost through initiatives by regional governments. This has also moved the most renowned global players in the sector to participate in the double tradeshow. In Hall 2 of the CIEC (Chinese International Exhibition Center), around forty exhibitors will present themselves at “Alpitec China” from Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the USA, with nearly a third of them from China. Beijing political scientist Pang Zhongying writes that the crisis “is becoming the starting point for the renewal of our relationships.” It comes at a time in which the cards are being dealt anew throughout the world. Companies in the sector from China and at the international level will be making use of the platform of “ispo china/Alpitec China” to present everything from A to Z having to do with winter sports. The combination tradeshow “ispo china/Alpitec China” is the only Chinese B2B (business to business) tradeshow in the area of winter sports and mountain technologies to offer drivers of business within the sector not only a product show, but also a comprehensive range of information.
This year, the “Asia Pacific Snow Conference” will run with the title “Snow Know-how – The Potential of the Chinese Winter Sports Sector”. The conference will last for two days and is being organized in collaboration with “ispo china”. On March 4, the motto will be “Fun and Popular Sports”, while on March 5, the second day of the conference, the main focus will be on business aspects concerning the construction and management of tourist resorts and ski areas. Work will be off to a quick start on March 4 with China’s most successful speed skater and winner of several Olympic medals, Ye Qiaobo, who, as the proprietor of three indoor skiing facilities, will speak about indoor skiing in China. In addition, there will be reports on attractions and events in ski areas, and the most favorite Chinese ski area will be chosen. On March 5, the discussion will center upon the construction of tourist resorts, the design and development of ski areas for investors, day tourism, and the quantum leap in quality of Chinese ski areas. After the success of the first edition of “Alpitec China” 2009 in Beijing, this Tradeshow for Mountain and Winter Technologies will take place together with “ispo china” on a yearly basis from now on. The new date for this double event in the area of winter sports will be the beginning of March. On top of that, “Alpitec China” is being presented with a new logo.
The new dates for ispo china/Alpitec China will be March 4-6, 2010. The timing was moved two weeks later in order to accommodate the ski resort sector. In China, the winter season draws to a close in early March, so a visit to the ispo china/Alpitec China tradeshow offers the opportunity to review the season as it comes to an end and to set the course for the new one.
In 2009, “Alpitec China” was doubled up for the first time with “ispo china“. The three days of the event drew 13,500 visitors, corresponding to an increase of 17 percent over 2008, when “ispo china“ was still being held by itself. By combining these two tradeshows, the selection of clothing and equipment for retailers at “ispo china” has been expanded by ski lift facilities, snowmaking technology, slope grooming equipment, access controls, and equipment for ski rental in the Alpitec pavilion.
While Europe is battling dropping numbers of skiers, this leisure time activity is booming in China. The goal of the double tradeshow is to provide 360 degree coverage of the entire winter sports sector in order to perfectly meet the needs of the Asian market. In addition to China, other markets in Asia that are interesting for the winter sports sector include Korea, Japan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and India. “Alpitec China” is both an important source of information for visitors to these countries and, at the same time, the perfect opportunity for exhibitors working at the international level to conquer these new, up-and-coming markets.
The Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center made its first step toward the East in 2009 with “Alpitec China”, since tradeshows have been more and more undergoing a transformation from being supply-oriented to demand-driven and thus are being held where the demand for the products, technologies, and services being exhibited already exists. In Beijing, there is once again the intention to form a group stand with the Italian Foreign Trade Commission ICE, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, and South Tyrol’s export organization EOS.
The Bolzano/Bozen Exhibition Center has many years of experience in the organization of tradeshows, and in addition to “Alpitec China”, it will also be organizing another tradeshow in China in 2010 with “China Rescue Expo”. The exhibitors at “Alpitec China 09” have indicated that they were very satisfied with the course of the tradeshow and the organization of the event. The CIEC Exhibition Center proved itself with both exhibitors and visitors, in no small part because of its very central location in Beijing. The overall impression of the first edition was positive with 90 percent of the visitors, while 86 percent of those surveyed indicated that they would also like to attend the second edition next year.
Bolzano/Bozen, Italy, June 2009
For the first time, “ispo china” and “Alpitec China” were united to perform one Tradeshow together which was held from the 19th to the 21st of February. Welcoming 13.500 visitors meant a surplus of 17 percent compared to the previews years when the tradeshows were organised separately. Fiera Bolzano / Messe Bozen is satisfied with the outcome of the Tradeshow and has provided the basis for a second edition in 2010.
The goal of the combined Tradeshows, “ispo china / Alpitec China”, is to cover the whole winter sport sector 360 degrees, to perfectly reach al the needs and demands of the market. The first edition of a tradeshow always faces two challenges, finding enough exhibitors to give insights to all sectors of the market and the visitors have to accept the range of products, explains Reinhold Marsoner, director of the Fiera Bolzano / Messe Bozen. Summing up, Reinhold Marsoner says, “Alpitec China started quite small with only 40 exhibitors coming from eight nations, but the high number of visitors demonstrates the great demand and interest for Mountain- and Winter Technologies in China. The successful accomplishment of a first edition is always the basis for a runner-up”.
Geraldine Coccagna, Project-Manager of the “Alpitec China” points out that, “We had three very intensive exhibition days, with a satisfying number of visitors at the stands of our exhibitors. I hope they were able to meet interesting new business partners and don’t expect too much from the first edition of this tradeshow. In general, it takes new businesses quite a while to gain ground in the Chinese market, due to the fact that Chinese business partners are rather sceptical at the beginning. This again emphasizes the importance of continuously being present at this tradeshow.”
Paul Bojarski who represented the companies, York/JCI snow making machine, HEAD ski and winter equipment, TYROLIA ski binding and MAS mountain designer and consultant, in Beijing was very satisfied by the “Alpitec China” and said “Thank you for the very good organization. This was the most efficient tradeshow that we had in China for the last 10 years for ski resort equipments. Our booth was always nearly full, even though Alpitec was during the opening ceremony of the University winter games which kept many Chinese clients out of Beijing. Next years’ tradeshow should be even better and we will have to get a larger booth to be able to accommodate for these additional visitors.”
The exhibitor Moshe Tessel from Israel is convinced that the “Alpitec China” was an important experience for him and his business, he states “Alpitec China 2009 has been a very interesting show to learn about the Chinese Ski Industry. It has been very useful for identifying the largest and most successful ski resorts. I believe that our presence was important for spreading information on our “All-Weather-Snow-Makers” to ski resort owners and managers. We will continue to be present in China in the future and highly appreciated the assistance that Fiera Bolzano gave us, exhibitors, during the show and the support we received from Erwin Stricker to better understand the local industry.”
Without any doubt, the sport article industry in China is booming. Due to the fast growing Chinese economy and the increasing wealth of the Chinese, more and more winter sport enthusiasts can be found. The number of skiing regions as well as the amount of people involved in winter sports has grown rapidly and therefore it is time for the 200 –still very small- skiing regions to improve their quality. “It is estimated that, the number of Chinese winter sportsmen grows by more than 700.000 every year and should rise to around ten million skiers in the next five years” mentions Oskar Andesner, Austrian trade commissioner in Beijing. This is the right moment for the European winter sports industry to launch the Chinese market and to set new standards for the future on a worldwide level.
During the tradeshow a meeting, between representatives of the Messe München and the Fiera Bolzano / Messe Bozen with the assistant secretary general of the Chinese sport article association, Luo Jie, who, furthermore, is the director of the, by the association organized, Sport article tradeshow, was arranged. At the moment the association is organising a winter sport article tradeshow in summer, and the goal behind the meeting was to see if a co-operation in the sector “Winter Sport Industry” would be possible.

The dates have now been firmly set for “Alpitec China”. With the new double event “ispo china/Alpitec China” from February 19 to 21, 2009 in Beijing, the Bolzano Exhibition Center and Munich International Trade Fairs will be putting together a 360°winter sports competence center for the Chinese market.
News of this new tradeshow was announced in February at a press conference during “ispo china 2008” in Beijing. The goal of the double tradeshow “ispo china/Alpitec China” is to provide 360 degree coverage of the entire winter sports sector, seeing as how the customer groups overlap in the Chinese market. “ispo china” covers the sectors of clothing and equipment for retailers and ski rental shops, and with “Alpitec China”, the offering is expanded by ski lift facilities, snowmaking technology, slope grooming equipment, and access controls.
After the success of the recently concluded edition of “Alpitec/Prowinter” in Bolzano, the Bolzano Exhibition Center received clear confirmation of its decision to symbiotically combine these two tradeshows. With “ispo china/Alpitec China”, it is now tackling the next project. For years now, Munich International Trade Fairs has been working together with the Bolzano Exhibition Center within CEFA, the exhibition center network and is likewise just as convinced about the combining of these two tradeshows.
Quite a number of exhibitors from “Alpitec/Prowinter” have indicated interest in a tradeshow presence in China, including Michele Graffer of the Graffer company, which already operates on the Chinese market and which has already decided to exhibit at “ispo china/Alpitec China”.
The ski and sporting goods industries in China are booming. With the country’s rapid economic development and the growing affluence of its inhabitants, winter sports are attracting more and more aficionados. The numbers of both skiing facilities and those enjoying the sport have increased dramatically in China, and there are now more than two hundred ski areas in the country, including those of a modest scale. For the European winter sports sector, this is the right time to open up the Chinese market and to set new, forward-looking standards on a worldwide basis.

Clemens Lindig, responsible for SKIDATA in China, said to be very positive towards the possibilities in China and the next months will show, what the real outcome of the contacts made during Alpitec China will bring. Skidata will definitely again participate at the next Alpitec China edition in 2010.
Five Italian companies from South Tyrol presented themselves united as Cluster sports & winterTECH by TIS innovation park: “these companies have made interesting contacts and Alpitec China has offered an opportunity to confront with the problems that characterize the Chinese market”, said TIS coordinator Andreas Winkler. “The investment in China is worth it, despite of the economic crisis, because the winter sports in China have a great future: China today already counts around 200 ski resorts.”
We are very satisfied with the 5th edition of the trade show ispo china held for the first time together with ALPITEC CHINA. High visitor numbers and a good positioning inside the hall made sure that visitors were attracted towards our exhibiting companies Leitner, Prinoth and Duolemeidi mountain resort, and this helped us to strengthen our presence in China. In contrast to previous winter trade shows that have been organized in China, ALPITEC CHINA had exclusively exhibitors from the winter technologies sector, which helped to attract specialized visitors.
Highly competent speakers approached this year’s APSC, which specifically targeted ski resort owners and managers. Topics like planning of ski areas as well as the collaboration between existing areas where discussed. Blengini showed which factors have to be considered when choosing an area to develop as ski resort and practically gave insight on the existing development plan of the Kanas area in NW China. Marzola brought the example of Dolomiti Superski in the Alpine Dolomites, where many little owners collaborate in a carusel. Halvardsson explained the success factors of Skistar, where one owner has linked 5 different and geographically distant ski destinations into one group.
Finally, Clemens Lindig, summarized the ideas his fellow speakers gave to briefly show how an access control system supports the aggregation of ski resorts and what other positive effects such a system can have on cutting down costs and expanding marketing activities.
The audience much appreciated the contents of the speeches, as underlined by the numerous questions and spontaneous comments.
